WhatsApp AI Agent for Business: Meta, Platform or n8n?

Three ways to put an AI agent on WhatsApp for your business: Meta Business Agent, the WhatsApp Business Platform with a provider, or your own build with n8n.

There are three ways to put an AI agent on WhatsApp for your business: turn on Meta’s own AI agent in the WhatsApp Business app, connect the WhatsApp Business Platform to a customer service provider, or build your own agent with a tool such as n8n or Dify on top of Meta’s API. They differ in how much control you get over answers and data, what connects to your other systems, and what you pay. Here is how to choose, what each costs and which WhatsApp rules apply to all of them.

Key takeaway

A small business that already answers customers in the WhatsApp Business app should first try Meta Business Agent where it’s available. A team with several agents, a CRM and higher volumes needs the WhatsApp Business Platform, through a provider or its own build. Build your own when the agent must look up orders, stock or bookings in your systems. Whatever you choose, keep the agent focused on your business, hand over to a person on request and budget for Meta’s per-message fees.

Which way should you choose: the short answer

The right setup depends on your team size, your systems and how much the agent must do:

  • One person or a small team answering in the WhatsApp Business app, mostly questions about products, prices and opening hours: Meta Business Agent, if it’s available for your business.
  • Several people answering, higher volumes, need for a shared inbox, tags and reports: the WhatsApp Business Platform through a customer service provider.
  • The agent must check orders, stock or bookings, follow your own rules or use your own knowledge base: your own build on the WhatsApp Business Platform with n8n, Dify or custom code.

Three ways compared

The three options are described here with the same five points.

Meta Business Agent in the WhatsApp Business app

  • Best for: small businesses that already use the WhatsApp Business app on a phone.
  • What you need: the WhatsApp Business app; according to Meta, the agent learns from your Facebook Page and website, and you can upload product catalogs or price lists.
  • What you pay: check Meta’s current terms for your account and market.
  • Strengths: the quickest start, no developer needed, and you can rewrite answers to change how it responds.
  • Weaknesses: Meta says it is available to eligible businesses in select markets, and it can’t look up data in your own systems such as an ERP or booking tool.

WhatsApp Business Platform with a customer service provider

  • Best for: teams with several agents and higher volumes.
  • What you need: a WhatsApp Business Platform account, which Meta describes as its enterprise-level WhatsApp APIs, connected through a provider’s inbox with AI features.
  • What you pay: the provider’s subscription plus Meta’s fees per message.
  • Strengths: shared inbox, routing and reporting, and AI features without building anything.
  • Weaknesses: a monthly subscription, and the AI only knows what the provider’s tool can connect to.

Your own agent with n8n, Dify or custom code

  • Best for: businesses that want the agent to act on their own data and rules.
  • What you need: a WhatsApp Business Platform account, an automation or AI platform such as n8n (which has a WhatsApp Business Cloud node) or Dify, a language model and an AI knowledge base.
  • What you pay: Meta’s fees per message, model usage, hosting or platform plans, and setup and maintenance.
  • Strengths: the agent can check orders, stock and bookings, follow your exact rules and keep data where you decide.
  • Weaknesses: it needs setup, testing and someone to maintain it; our comparison of n8n, Dify and Coze explains which tool fits.

WhatsApp rules every AI agent must follow

Every AI agent on WhatsApp works under the same Meta rules, whichever setup you choose:

  • Business use, not a general chatbot. Meta’s terms for the WhatsApp Business Platform bar providers of general-purpose AI assistants from offering them on the platform when the AI is the main service; a business using AI to answer questions about its own products and orders is a different case. Keep the agent focused on your business.
  • The 24-hour window. Under the WhatsApp Business Messaging Policy, a customer’s message opens a 24-hour window for free-form replies, including automated ones; outside it, only approved templates can be sent.
  • A clear way to reach a person. Automated conversations need prompt, clear and direct escalation paths, such as a transfer to a human agent.
  • Opt-in. You need people’s permission before you message them.

Our guide to building an AI customer service chatbot explains these rules in more detail, together with EU transparency and data protection requirements.

Personal agents such as OpenClaw, which sign in to a regular WhatsApp account as a linked device, are a different case: keep them to personal-assistant use, as our OpenClaw setup guide explains.

What a WhatsApp AI agent costs

The cost of a WhatsApp AI agent is made of up to five parts, depending on the setup:

  • Meta’s message fees: on the WhatsApp Business Platform, Meta charges per message, with rates by country and message type.
  • Provider or platform plans: a customer service provider’s subscription, or n8n or Dify cloud plans if you don’t self-host.
  • AI model usage: paid per amount of text processed when you use a commercial model API.
  • Setup: preparing the knowledge base, connecting systems, designing the handoff and testing.
  • Maintenance: updating answers, prices and policies, and reviewing conversations.

How to set up a WhatsApp AI agent in five steps

Setting up a WhatsApp AI agent takes five steps, whichever route you choose:

  1. Choose the number and the route. Decide which phone number customers will write to and whether it stays in the WhatsApp Business app or moves to the WhatsApp Business Platform.
  2. Prepare what the agent should know. Products, prices, delivery terms and frequent questions, written as clear question-and-answer pairs and kept up to date.
  3. Define what it may do alone. Answering questions and collecting details is usually fine; discounts, refunds and complaints go to a person. Our guide to AI agents for small business explains how to set up these approvals.
  4. Test with real conversations. Use past chats, in every language you serve, including attempts to get a discount or change the agent’s instructions.
  5. Launch, then review weekly. Read the conversations it couldn’t handle and improve the answers.

FAQ

Can I add an AI agent to the WhatsApp Business app?

Yes, where Meta offers it: Meta Business Agent works inside the WhatsApp Business app and learns from your Facebook Page, website and uploaded catalogs or price lists. Meta says it is available to eligible businesses in select markets, with more markets coming, so check whether it appears in your app.

Is it allowed to use ChatGPT or another AI on WhatsApp for my business?

Yes, for your own customer service. Meta’s terms restrict providers whose main offering on WhatsApp is a general-purpose AI assistant; a business using AI to answer questions about its own products, orders and bookings is not in that category, but it must follow the messaging policy, including the 24-hour window and a clear way to reach a person.

What is the difference between the WhatsApp Business app and the WhatsApp Business Platform?

The WhatsApp Business app is the free app a business uses on a phone, and it includes Meta Business Agent where available. The WhatsApp Business Platform is Meta’s enterprise-level API, used through providers or your own software for shared inboxes, integrations and custom AI agents, with fees per message.
